Here listed are but few of the Atrocities meted out on the Bakassi People.

LIST OF CAMEROUN ATROCITIES IN BAKASSI
(1968-2004)

A)        PRE – JUDGEMENT ERA (1968 -2002)

  • March 1968   -  One Mr. Bassey Etim Asuquo of Atabong was beaten to death by the Cameroon Gendarmes.
  • June 1968     -   Five fishermen of Atabong killed due to disagreement with a gendarme.
  • March 1969  - One Mr. Etim Andem Okon of Atabong was beaten to death by the Cameroon gendarmes   
  • Jan. 1973     -  One Mr. Mbuk Sereke Mbuk was beaten to unconsciousness by the gendarmes and died three days latter.
  • Jan. 1973    -   Mr. Etim Effiong Ekop was severely beaten, maimed and thrown into Creek by these same gendarmes.
  • Jan. 1973     - Five Nigerian Soldiers were murdered while on patrol In Bakassi.
  • Jan. 1973   -  Two Nigerian Fishermen were shot dead in cold Clood as they were about to go out into the sea for their normal occupation.
  • Jan. 1973   - A student of the University of Calabar who went to Collect his fees form his father in Abana was shot by gendarmes.
  • June 1973 - Cameroun gendarmes numbering about arrived in Bakassi in tow ships and expelled all Nigerian fishermen. They threatened them if they did not leave and so the fishermen left their villages and belongings. This was reported to the Obong of Calabar who sent a protest to the Military Governor dated 6th  July, 1973. (Copy attached) Obong of Calabar welcome address to Admiral Soroh 10th July, 1973 (E).   • August 1973  - The fishermen staged a demonstration in Calabar
  • May 1981       -  Five Nigerian soldiers killed during routine border Patrol duty by the gendarmes, and Cameroun accepted being agressors in Nigerian territory, apologized and pledged compensation for the five Nigerian soldiers they killed.
  • Jan 1982       -  Abana, Ine Ekoi and Atabong were renamed by Camerounian authorities as already mentioned in this memorandum.
  • Jan. 1982      -  The governor of South West Province of Cameroun,Mr. Fon Fosi Ntaw, arrived Bakassi with 100 gendarmes, forced the fishermen, their wives and children at gun point to renounce their Nigerian citizenship in preference to that of Cameroun and to pay to the Cameroun authorities. When they resisted they were beaten up and detained. One Chief Christopher Okon was compelled to a ransom of N600.00 for resisting arrest
  • May 1982      -  Cameroun gendarmes arrived at Ine Odiong and Harassed the fishermen, demanding taxes.
  • November1983  -  Cameroun gendarmes arrived Abana at about 6.00am and raped the women and looted the fishermen’s property
  • Feb. 1988     -  Thirteen Nigerian were arrested at sea, Taken to Cameroun and detained. They were only released after the intervention of the Cross River State Governor.
  • Jan. 1989      -  Cameroun gendarmes attacked thirteen Bakassi Bakassi villages to demand taxes and levies. These villagers were severely beaten when they resisted arrest
  • 1990              -   One Mr. Okon Ekpe of Abana was severely beaten Maimed . He latter died as a result of the injuries he sustained during the process.
  • 1991 -  An indigene of Atabong who would not allow his Wife to be raped before him was severely beaten and shot in the leg and his wife raped all the same.
  • 1992              -   Cameroun gendarmes seized the speed boats and nets of Nigerians in the open seas, demanded N,5000.00 fine From each of them before releasing them.
  • Jan. 1993        -  The gendarmes invaded Abana in two warships and Demanded taxes which were paid by some. Others refused on grounds that they Nigerians and had already paid their taxes and for which they show their receipts. This infuriated the gendarmes so much that they caused panic by releasing they volleys into the air, seized Abana signpost and left.
  • 1994 – 2002     -  Era of full hostilities

B)        POST – JUDGEMENT ERA (1968 -2002)

  • Chief Etim E. Okon lost 240 HP Outboard Engines and fishing nets worth N2.5m
  • Chief Okon Edem Ita lost two 40HP out board Engines and fishing nets worth N2.2M
  • Chief Efefiong Asuquo lost Three 40HP outboard Engines and fishing nets worth N2.7M
  • Chief Andem Effiong lost two 40HP out board Engines and fishing nets worth N2.5M
  • Chief Etim Archibong Isemin lost two 40HP out board Engines and fishing nets worth N1.3M
  • Chief Okon Bassey Orok lost two 40HP out board Engines and fishing nets worth N2.2M.His boat Boy was also killed.
  • Prince Patrick Bassey Archibong lost two 40HP out board Engines and fishing nets worth N2.5M
  • Chief Bassey Edet Ubuo lost two 40HP out board Engines and fishing nets worth N2.7M
  • Mr. Otu Bassey Ekpenyong lost two 40HP out board Engines and fishing nets worth N2.2M
  • Mr Ibok Edet Effiong lost two 40HP out board Engines and fishing nets worth N2.5M
  • Chief Etim Okon Etim lost two 40HP out board Engines and fishing nets worth N2.2M
